Review of Men In Martian Ice
 by Mike Rimmer
Associate editor of UK Christian music magazine Cross Rhythms.

Tired of the same old same old? Looking for something original? Something different? Something dangerous? Here it is! Check out this electronic album from keyboardist Sidney Howard and funk fan Jack Marchbanks because these guys cook up music that genuinely takes you on a journey and blows your mind. Based in Detroit and with mainstream musical credentials, the album is actually a bit of a journey, taking in music written by the guys over the past 20 years. It is also a spiritual odyssey examining different aspects of the human condition. Sorry but you'll have to engage the brain whilst turning up your amp. Got to confess that after a few listens, I am only just beginning to understand some of the pieces though musically this is incredibly satisfying. If you love the diversity and creativity of Secret Archives of the Vatican, you must check this out. Favourites include "Ophdisbigblughmuhsheen" with its' funky undertones and segments of sitar. "I Love Polyester" at first glance appears to be some nonsense along the lines of the Barnes & Barnes classic "Fishheads", but don't be deceived as there's a deeper message lurking underneath! And that's the whole fascination with this because Carbonated Milk are intelligent musicians - check out the jazz influences and avante garde musical approach but also check out their desire to communicate a Christian message in an intriguing manner. Their use of samples is brilliant. Other highlights are the electronic funk of "Duophonix", the intense sinister atmospheres and treated vocals of "Dearborn", the sheer groovyness of "Malabala"
and the totally satirical "Black Velvet Elvis". Out on their own, it's weird, it's wonderful and Christendom desperately needs more bands with the originality and the creative vision of Carbonated Milk.
